He began his acting with drama film Nishant and then worked in films like Sarfarosh, Jaane bhi do yaaro, Ardh Satya, Umraao Jaan, and A Wednesday. In 2006 he turned to a director with the film Yun hota toh kya hota. He has been awarded many Filmfare awards and National film awards. Naseeruddin Shah has also been felicitated with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan respectively.

Naseeruddin Shah started his theatre acting at the age of 14 with Merchant of Navy being his first show. His debut film Nishant made him win a National Film Award and was also nominated for Oscars. Apart from Bollywood he has also acted in Pakistani and Hollywood films but even after being an established actor he did not leave theatre. Naseeruddin Shah ‘s first wife was Parveen Murad was 16 years elder to him. Two years later they started having a tiff and they got separated. After which he got married to Ratna Pathak who is also an actress and have two sons together.
